Kaliya Mardana: The Divine Conquest

Description

At the focal point of the composition, Lord Krishna—rendered in a brilliant cerulean blue—performs a victorious divine dance atop the hooded heads of the fierce serpent. With effortless grace, Krishna holds Kaliya's massive, arching tail overhead while controlling the beast, framed by a delicate canopy of flowering branches above.

To the right, the waters of the Yamuna River come alive as the Nagapatnis (serpent wives of Kaliya) emerge from the lotus-laden waves. Half-human and half-serpent, they lift lotus blossoms, conch shells, and lit lamps (diya) in humble veneration, pleading with Krishna to show mercy and spare their husband.
